Sri Lankan cuisine shares a lot in common with the food of South India, both in its flavours and cooking styles. The big difference is that Sri Lankan cooking often makes use of a lot of coconut, while the island's cuisine also reflects Malay, Dutch, Portuguese and indigenous Sri Lankan influences.
Rice and curry is the standard meal in Sri Lanka, but it isn't a single dish. It usually means a plate of rice served with several smaller curries and side dishes. Other popular foods include hoppers (bowl shaped pancakes made from fermented rice batter), string hoppers (steamed rice flour noodles pressed into nests) and kottu roti (chopped flatbread stir fried with spices, vegetables, eggs, meat or other fillings).
