Canadian food doesn’t have the huge number of long standing traditional dishes that some countries do, but it does have a handful of classics that are deeply tied to local history and everyday life. The cuisine is shaped by French and British colonial roots, Indigenous foodways, and waves of immigration, with comforting dishes that suit the climate.
Split pea soup, a thick, ham based soup that has been a Quebec favourite for centuries, is a staple in homes. Butter tarts, small pastries with a rich, sweet filling of butter, sugar, and egg, are a beloved treat and a point of pride in central Canada. And of course, Canada’s most famous addition to the culinary landscape is poutine, the iconic dish of fries, cheese curds, and gravy that started in Quebec and is now found nationwide.
